Ramblings from a 30 something geek girl.. more than likely will be filled with random fan gushings or as I like to call them Geeksquees ;) Book reviews, Rants, Personal stuff and opinions, sometimes NSFW, Gaming stuffs, and other such nonsense..Ohhh and tons of art!

Stuff I’m Geeking Over This Week 10/21/12 ed. *ADD ON!*

So I forgot to put something on my list and I can’t believe I forgot but here it is!

5. Comic Book Men

Ok so I absolutely loved the first season of this show and I care not one bit that it is very much like Pawn Stars but with a comic shop.  I love the feel of the show, it is just like being in a shop, working there(which I did for a few years).  Well maybe not exactly because I only get to have the feeling once a week but hey it is better than nothing ;)  This post in particular though is about the season premiere for Season 2 and this wonderful lady.

It doesn’t giver her name, unless I missed it in the credits, but I was so thrilled by her!  She came in and not only knew what she was looking at comic book/geek wise but was shopping for herself!  She impressed Walt, which to this day I have yet to see a female do on the show, he even jokingly offered her a job.

I was so elated to see a woman on the show who knew her business and was not in the store to just sell something that she had found or even worse that she was forcing her husband/boyfriend to sell, or to buy a gift for somebody.  We are out there! There are those of us that know our lore(whatever it might be that we are fans of) just as well as our male counterparts, hell sometimes better.  Right so I’m rambling but I was just very happy at this little segment of the show.

Stuff I’m Geeking Over This Week 10/21/12 ed.

Been a few weeks once again but here we go :)  Things that I’m in love with right now.

1. Once Upon a Time

I have been hearing about this series for awhile now but not really wanting to fall in love with yet another show that would most likely get canceled I didn’t let myself watch it.  When I heard that not only was there going to be a Season 2, but that it was one of the most welcomed panels at SDCC this year I decided to bite the bullet and give it a try.

I love this show.  From the very first episode I have been entranced.  The story telling is amazing, and I love how well they transition from the real world to the land of Fairy Tales.  The actors are wonderful and I can see them as their true “selves” as well as who they think they are now.  I am almost done with Season 1 and can not wait to continue watching it and start on Season 2.  Now I just have to keep my hopes high that it will continue to not only be a hit but have good story and not fall into insane story lines just to keep going.

2. Books, books, books!

The past few weeks have been very rough for me personally and as I have always done in the past, since I was born if you ask my Father, I have turned to books to help me cope.  I’ve mentioned this before but Bookman’s here in Phoenix is one of my favorite book stores.  They deal in used books, movies, comics, music.. it is like a Barnes and Noble but everything is half price plus they have random items you would never see at a B&N.  So this past week I collected a few things I didn’t mind trading in so that I could get some credit and find myself some books!

This was what I got about two days ago with what was left of my credit, I also bought the BF two Robert Heinlein books and one Asimov. So two Robin McKinley books, The Hero and the Crown to replace the one that I have read so much it split at the seems, and Beauty the re-imagining of Beauty and Beast, which I haven’t read before but I’m sure it will be great. Also the first two books in The Crownthistle Chronicles by Cecilia Dart-Thorton, neither of which I have read before and Wolfsbane by Patricia Briggs.  Wolfsbane I’m sure will be a quick fun read like Briggs other novels.

This one is from last week, I had less time to look around so I grabbed up a few Anne McCaffrey books that I had been missing as well as one new one to try. Anne McCaffrey is the reason that I read sci-fi/fantasy, I read one of her Pern novels in 8th grade and never looked back ;) Now don’t get me wrong, I will read anything, but McCaffrey holds a special place in my little geeky heart.  So I picked up To Ride Pegasus and Pegasus in Flight, the first two books in her Talent series.  Also got Spirit Gate by Kate Elliott, I have not read that one either.

With the purchase of the McCaffrey books I have completed her Talent series, there are eight books total, it only took me about 15 years to buy them all for some reason. ;)

3. New 52!

Yes yes I am behind in my comic book reading but life has been hectic this past year and I just got the chance this past Thursday to hit up my comic book store and take a bit out of my day to read through some of the stuff I have been missing out on.  The first three titles I decided to check out were Batgirl, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman.. all three have their first trade paperbacks out so I sat down and had a read ;)

Alrighty.. of the three that I read Supergirl will be the one that I most definitely keep reading! I not only liked the writing but the art is great too. I like the take on the character and it kept me interested right away. The creative team on this one is:

Daniel “Dan” Green, Dave McCaig, John J. Hill, Mahmud A. Asrar, Matt Idelson, Michael Green, Mike Johnson, Paul Mounts (Bongotone), Rob Leigh, Wil Moss

Wonder Woman on the other hand, I was most looking forward too but honestly the art turned me off pretty quickly, and I am fairly open to most styles, this one though I just couldn’t get into.  The story seemed all over and I’m not yet sure if I will keep reading it but of course I’ll give it a chance. Creative team:

Brian Azzarello, Chris Conroy, Cliff Chiang, Daniel “Dan” Green, Jared K. Fletcher, Matthew Wilson, Matt Idelson, Tony Akins

Batgirl.. hmm what to say? I am not a huge fan of the Batverse, but I loved Oracle.  I felt that Barbara Gordan gained so much personality and strength after she had been shot by the Joker.  I can see why they decided to go with her as the 52’s Batgirl and the story was decent and the art was good so I’ll keep reading to say where they take it.  For now I hold judgement on this one as well. Creative team:

Brian Smith, Dave Sharpe, Ed Benes, FCO Plascencia, Gail Simone, Greg Capullo, Ulises Arreola

I’ll let you guys know as I get to the other titles and start reading the others.  I have to say it is nice being able to pick these up and not be completely lost though :) I have been sadly been out of the scene other than keeping on eye out on comic news online, so at least with these I have a chance to keep up on the story.  I still have a lot of catching up to do as far as some of the other titles that I had to postpone buying for the last few years, I’ll get to them at some point ;)

4. Jesse James Comics

Up until the past year my comic shop of choice was Atomic Comics here in Phoenix, I even worked for them quite awhile back, but unannounced and out of nowhere they closed down.  This happened right after I had moved back down to Phoenix a little over a year ago and I was shattered.

So I started looking into a new shop and thankfully I found Jesse James.  It is very close to my house and he is a great guy!  Not only is the shop very welcoming but they seem to genuinely care about their customers and every time I have been there I was very glad I had gone :)

That is all for now.. It has been a long month and I only foresee things getting harder before they finally get better, so these few things that make me happy can only make things better right?  Have a great week!

In other news..

I will be doing a Stuff I’m geeking over post today at some point just have to get some things together for it.

Superhero Sunday and other stuffs

Alrighty!! Gonna look for things to post for Superhero Sunday as well as work on a Stuff I’m geeking over post.. At some point today I need to watch the Doctor Who episode from last night but I need to wait for my daughter to wake up because if I watch it without her she might disown me ;) Hmm I know there was something else but I can’t remember!!

Also that is me last night after having a few drinks and watching all the Bourne movies with my friends :D Apparently I wear my goggles when I drink..

Stuff I’m Geeking Over This Week! 9/16/12 ed.

Been a few weeks since my last Geeking post but I’ve been busy and sometimes the things I geek out over don’t get any new additions ;)  Sooo here we go.

1. Doctor Who Series 7

I have to say that so far I am very much liking this Series, it almost feels like the first four and I am fan.  It isn’t that I didn’t like Series 5 and 6 I just didn’t find myself as drawn to them as the earlier ones.  I honestly can not wait for the new companion and loved the Oswin Oswald character that she played in the first episode of the Series.  Hooray for Doctor Who.

2. Hell on Wheels

Besides being a sci-fi/fantasy nut I love anything historical, though the older it is the more I seem to like it, barring my obsession with the 1860’s to early 1900’s.  Hell on Wheels combines the Old West, Civil War, and the railroad… three of my favorite things :D My dad has worked for the Railroad my entire life and grew up on and around trains so I pretty much adore them.  The characters are so real and are all faulted, there are no “good guys” and it is one of the things I love about the show.

I am looking forward to tonight’s episode very much!

3. Gaming

I am a table top gamer.  I have been playing RPG table top games since I was 14 years old and they are a huge part of my life (Dungeons and Dragons, Palladium Games, Vampire the Masquerade, Star Wars, ShadowRun, Dead Lands.. so many more I could be here all night just listing them). Being 33 now I have spent 19 years of my life tossing dice and having a grand o’ time with my friends. Sheesh I even have a necklace and earring set that have D20’s on them, thank you baby!

The last few years have been lacking in game time, being an adult can suck ;( On the other hand, the last two weeks have been amazing!  My friends and I, we have been gaming with since I was 17, have gotten deep into a fantasy game and I have not had fun like this in ages.  Now not only do I get to game with my friends but I am running a game for my kids, 15 and 13 respectively and that puts a whole new spin on things :D

4. The Guild

Felicia Day and The GeekandSundry channel on YouTube announced this week that The Guild Season 6 will be premiering on October 2nd!!! I am so excited for this! The Guild is an amazing and non critical look into the life of geeks like me.  Yes sometimes we can be strange and socially awkward but we are fantastic and it is great to be able to be so happy and excited about the things we love :D

That’s all for now :D

Stuff I’m Geeking Over This Week! 8/29/12 Edition.

Alrighty lets see what I’ve been squeeing over this week shall we?

1. Books!

I usually go through probably 4-5 books a week on a good week, I’m an exceptionally fast reader and in love with Sci-Fi/Fantasy so that tends to be what I read though honestly I will read anything ;)  So this past week I got to read a few new ones:

The Diviner by Melanie Rawn

I love this author.. she always has a huge cast in her books(The Dragon Prince, Dragon Star, and Exiles series) but the way she writes I have no issues following all of the story for each different character.  I had sworn to myself I was not going to read any more of her books until she put out the damn third book to her Exiles series but I was at the book store and I couldn’t help myself.  The Diviner is set in a very Arabian type setting which I always love and follows one families path for retribution through four generations.  I couldn’t put it down and next time I hit up Bookman’s I’m going to look for the other book set in this universe The Golden Key.

Geist by Philippa Ballantine

I had seen the cover to this a few years ago when I was looking for art, I do that, and was interested right off because of the beautiful cover art by Jason Chan.  So the other day when I picked it up along with the the previous entry.  It is amazing!   The general synopsis is: “Between the living and the dead is the Order of the Deacons, protectors of the Empire, guardians against possession, sentinels enlisted to ward off malevolent hauntings by the geists…”  A world that is somewhat colonial, somewhat fantasy, and somewhat steampunk.  The main character Sorcha Feris is wonderfully real and faulted as well as capable. If you have read L.E. Modesitt Jr’s The Corean Chronicles and like it you need to check this out as well.

2. Doctor Who and other Television.

Right Doctor Who as usual ;) Series 7 premieres on September 1st and as a well to get the fandom even more excited the BBC has been posting The Pond Life(http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00xwctd) a web series.

I think they are trying to make my brain explode in want for a real full length episode.. but since I can’t have that yet I suppose this works.  I honestly can not wait for the new companion to join the show! I don’t mind Matt Smith as The Doctor at all but I have never quite enjoyed Amy, sorry Amy lovers, so I am really quite excited to see how the new companion will shape the show.

In other T.V. News..

Trying to catch up on a few shows that I fell behind on before the new seasons start to air.  So The Big Bang Theory(Yes I like it so shh), Glee, and Castle to name a few.  Though none of them are on Netflix so I’m having to scour the interwebz to find what I’m looking for so wish me luck.

3. Gaming!

Game wise I have been playing Palladium fantasy with my group, my best friend is running a campaign and I am playing a gnome wizard so I’m having a blast! I love me some gnomes :D I have said before that I am not a huge Palladium fan, the system is bulky and combat takes forever but since my friends still like it I give in and play.  I myself am running a Pathfinder campaign and so far I am quite happy with how it is turning out, maybe if my friends like it enough we can stop playing Palladium ;) By the way.. the Goblin above is a Pathfinder Goblin and they are one of the most amazing monsters redone by Paizo, crazy as they come and super fun to throw at a low level party.

4. Kickstarters..

Keeping track of Kickstarters I wish I had the money to invest in.. here are the main two, a zombie trilogy in the works and a Table Top gaming app that I would love to see!

Stuff I’m Geeking Over This Week! Coming Soon..

Just realized I haven’t done one of these in about two weeks so gonna get it put together and post it either tonight or in the morning :) Don’t know if anyone is looking forward to it but I hope so!

Stuff I’m Geeking Over This Week! aka GeekSquee’s Abound!!!

<iframe width=”640” height=”360” src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/R7YGoVyRSik?rel=0” frameborder=”0” allowfullscreen></iframe>

2. Christopher Eccleston my favorite Doctor will be playing a villian in Thor 2! I really don’t know much about the comic version of Thor though I did like the movie, it just isn’t one of the comics I keep up on but! being that I liked the movie and its Eccleston I am super excited now! yea! This is the article that I read on it…

“Christopher Eccleston will play Thor 2’s villain, Malekith The Accursed!

Former leather-jacketed Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston is in final talks for the major villain of the second Thor flick, Thor: The Dark World, which wil be helmed byGame of Thrones director Alan Taylor.

Malekith is the ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim and a trickster and illusionist, which makes him the perfect co-conspirator for Loki. Oh, and he dresses like a Mardi Gras float crashing into a Scandinavian black metal music video — psyched to see Eccleston in such zany regalia! Thor: The Dark World will hit theaters on November 8, 2013.

3. Other TV type news!  I am really liking The Nerdist specials on BBC America, in particular last weeks episode on Toys had me giggling like a silly girl while I was watching it, so if you havn’t had a chance to check it out yet I suggest it! Here is the commercial for last weeks back to back specials and this weekend they are about the science of Doctor Who and a tribute to science, weeee!

<iframe width=”640” height=”360” src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/hxaZTU1d43U?rel=0” frameborder=”0” allowfullscreen></iframe>

Also TV wise Tonight August 2nd on G4tv on Attack of the Show, David Tennant is the guest… um yea do I need to say anymore?

4.  My friend Chad who owns CTM Props here in Arizona is expanding his business and making new things of awesome cool Star Wars nature!    Here is the link to the business Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/CTMProps and here are some pics of the things that he makes for fantastic Star Wars cosplay, he himself is a member of the 501st Legion - Dune Sea Garrison. If you are interested in buying items from him just let him know :D

5. Not Geek news really but we have all read the pro/con Chick-Fil-A stuff… came across this article by the way of Wil Wheaton’s twitter and thought I would share as well because it is amazing and I agree so much with the author.

That is it for now, leave me fantastic comments?

Also!!!! Why won’t my embed’d stuff show??? *cries*

Stuff I’m Geeking Over This Week:

This week:

1. Finally got my hands on my own copy of The Guild: Fawkes :)

Wooo! It was great of course, all The Guild comics are, but of course it has Wil Wheaton co-writing so it is even better.

2. There was an in-store even at my local comic shop (http://www.jessejamescomics.com/site/) on Saturday evening so I finally got to meet EBas, or Eric Basaldua for those who don’t know his pen-name, here is a link to his deviantart page:http://ebas.deviantart.com/.  I got him to sign my Alice in Wonderland #1 from Zenescope, he did the cover art for it.

Also got to see Raven Gregory again (http://www.facebook.com/raven.gregory) one of my fav writers in comics :)  I also got his autograph since he is the writer.

Not to mention the face that Nei (http://toolkitten.deviantart.com/) did the colors and she just amazing all around, she is quickly tipping my scale on favorite artist.

3. Still watching Eureka :) I’m on season 4, the first episode with Felicia Day! So not only do I get the usual cast who I love but I also get Felicia Day who I have the biggest girly nerd crush on so it pretty much just keeps getting better.

4. Also finished up the first season of Legend of Korra, which I felt was amazing!  I can’t wait for Season 2 even though they don’t have a release date for it yet as far as I know lol.  Also started watching New Girl, I have only seen the pilot episode so far but not sure if I like it yet or not.  My sense of humor tends to be “English” from what I am told so I just don’t know if the jokes are too blatant or what but I’m still gonna give it a chance.

5.  Books: I finished Empress by Karen Miller and as of yet I don’t own the next two in the trilogy so I am digging into my collection for reading material.  Not that I mind ;)  I am thinking I will hit up all my fav’s until I can get some new books so I’m gonna start with The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley,

it is a very small book but still one of my absolute favorites and I will always love it, then I think I will head into something that will take me a bit longer and re-read all of my Pern books starting with the Harper Hall trilogy, they were the first fantasy books I ever read and I credit Anne McCaffrey with starting my obsession with Fantasy/Sci-Fi.

Until next week :)

Stuff I’m Geeking Over This Week:

So I’m gonna start doing a weekly thing where I list what I’m doing geek wise.. Kinda like Felicia Day’s Fave Five on the Flog ;) She is my hero btw.  Ok soo..

1. This week I started reading Empress by Karen Miller.

So far I’m really liking the book even if I don’t have as much time as I used to to loose myself in a book and finish it in a day ;)  I love books set in an Arabian/Persian type setting and this has that plus dark fantasy so I’m digging it.

2. Still watching Eureka, yes I know I’m super behind but after seeing Colin Ferguson at the Phoenix ComiCon a few weeks ago, along with Wil Wheaton, I just had to watch.  I had wanted to get into it for awhile but like I said above being an adult sucks sometimes and I don’t always have the time to put into my hobbies that I’d like to.  As for the show I am in Season Two 2 and the show is amazing!  I love all the characters but I have to say I feel for Fargo lol

3. Steampunk!!!!! No really, I have always loved the look and culture of steampunk but once again after the Con I am even more obsessed with it and I am now trying to put together my own outfit for next year, as well as joining the Arizona Steampunk Society.  They have meet-ups about once a month and I am hoping to get to go to next month’s.  As far as stuff I’ve found online and like I said I’ve been into it for awhile now my favorite model/designer is Kato, not only is she beautiful but her clothing designs are amazing and I just wish my weight loss would go more quickly so that I could try to make the same sort of things for myself.

Along the same lines but more like a parallel universe, I joined the Arizona Browncoats too :)

4. As for gaming, I’m still playing Skyrim because I was late on getting that one so I play as I get too and as much as I’d rather be playing some Pathfinder, we are playing a New West campaign in the Palladium system right now, so I have a Justice Ranger whom I’m getting attached to :)  Sadly still highly addicted to Castleville on Facebook as well.

Ok I think that is it right now.. If anyone actually thinks this is interesting please let me know, that way I can try to make them cooler in the future.
